2025 Taipei Marathon to Kick Off on December 21 Elite Runners from 57 Countries Gather in Taipei to Push Beyond the Finish Line
The 2025 Taipei Marathon, the only city-course road race in Taiwan awarded the World Athletics (WA) Gold Label, will officially start in the early morning of December 21 at Taipei City Hall Square. Marking another major milestone, this year’s event has attracted 4,845 international runners from 57 countries, setting a new record for overseas participation and highlighting Taipei’s growing stature as an international marathon city.
Ahead of the main race, the popular Christmas Breakfast Run will take place on December 20, featuring 9 km and 3 km categories as a festive warm-up event. In the early morning of December 21, a total of 28,000 runners will gather at Taipei City Hall Square for what many regard as the most anticipated road racing event of the year. The full marathon will start at 6:30 a.m., followed by the half marathon at 7:00 a.m., as runners take on the course guided by the event’s official theme, “Beyond the Finish,” challenging personal limits and striving for new heights.
Rising Competitive Intensity as Global and Domestic Elites Go Head-to-Head
In accordance with World Athletics Gold Label requirements, the organizing committee has invited a designated number of certified elite athletes to ensure international competition standards. This year’s field includes 17 international elite runners, among them Platinum Label athletes Bethwel Kibet Chumba of Kenya and Maru Teferi of Israel. Both athletes hold personal bests under 2 hours and 5 minutes, and their recent performances suggest strong potential to challenge the Taipei Marathon course record of 2:09:18, drawing attention to the possibility of a new record.
Taiwanese elite runners will also compete at full strength. In the marathon division, top domestic contenders include Chiang Chieh-Wen, Chou Ting-Yin, Chou Hung-Yu, Cheng Jui-Chu, Lee Han-Hsuan, Tsao Chun-Yu, Hsieh Chien-Ho, Chang Chia-En, Chang Chih-Hsuan, and Tsai Yun-Hsuan. In the half marathon, leading local athletes such as Huang Po-Hsien, Chou Hsien-Feng, Tian Jui-Hsiang, Su Feng-Ting, Lei Lisa, Dong Chia-chi, and Wang Tzu-Ling will face off against elite competitors from around the world in pursuit of podium honors.
Domestic Elites Poised for Breakthrough Performances
In 2024, several Taiwanese long-distance runners achieved personal bests on Gold Label courses. Among them, Chou Ting-Yin recorded a time of 2:21:17 in the marathon, setting a new personal record and finishing as the top domestic runner. He later captured three gold medals at the 2025 National Games, including his first-ever national marathon title. Riding this momentum, Chou returns to the Taipei Marathon course aiming for another breakthrough.
Chang Chih-Hsuan, one of Taiwan’s leading female distance runners, continues to draw attention following a series of breakthrough performances. In 2024, she recorded a personal best of 1:18:02 in the half marathon at the Taipei Marathon, and went on to set a new full marathon personal best of 2:43:26 at the 2025 Osaka Women’s Marathon. This year, Chang will make her full marathon debut at the Taipei Marathon, where she is set to face 2024 national champion Hsieh Chien-Ho. The two most recently met at the National Games, where Hsieh claimed victory by a margin of 1 minute and 19 seconds. Their renewed showdown on the Taipei course is widely expected to deliver one of the event’s most compelling matchups.
To further encourage domestic elite development, organizers have increased prize incentives, offering a total of NT$500,000 in bonuses for Taiwanese marathon runners. The top ten finishers in both the men’s and women’s marathon divisions will be rewarded, with champions receiving NT$100,000 each and additional bonuses ranging from NT$5,000 to NT$50,000 for places two through ten.
Upgraded Half Marathon System Aligns with International Standards
The half marathon competition has also been comprehensively upgraded this year. To assist Taiwanese runners in using Taipei Marathon results to qualify for international athletics events, the organizing committee has increased the number of timing chip checkpoints to meet global regulations. The initiative aims to help half marathon athletes steadily enhance their competitive capacity and progress toward elite full marathon competition, raising the overall standard of long-distance running in Taiwan.
Christmas Breakfast Run Draws Over 2,200 Participants for Festive Warm-Up
Now in its second consecutive year, the Christmas Breakfast Run will take place early on December 20, offering 9 km and 3 km routes and attracting record participation. Title sponsor Herbalife has rallied more than 2,200 runners to join the event, showcasing strong community engagement and enthusiasm for fitness.
The venue will be transformed with festive decorations, including a towering Christmas tree and themed installations. Participants are encouraged to wear creative holiday costumes, turning the morning run into a festive sports celebration. Organizers also revealed that runners sporting Christmas-themed attire may receive special surprise gifts.
Citywide Cheering Squads Energize the Course
On race day, 50 cheering squads formed by local residents and volunteers will be stationed along the course to support runners with music, dance, and encouragement. Among them is the Meili Ai-Wu Performance Team, an Amis Indigenous group that has participated continuously since 2020. The team shared that the Taipei Marathon has become their most anticipated annual event, adding that every cheer and high-five is meant to give runners extra strength when it matters most. They extended their message to participants: “No matter your pace, as long as you keep moving forward, you are already surpassing yourself. The entire city is running with you.”
Public–Private Collaboration Powers a World-Class Marathon
The Taipei City Government expresses its sincere appreciation to corporate partners for their long-term commitment to sponsoring the event and for working alongside the City as a vital pillar supporting runners in pursuit of their goals. Longtime supporters of the Taipei Marathon, including Fubon Financial Holding, along with adidas, Herbalife, CITIZEN, PaMi Noodles, Porsche Centre Taipei (PGUM), Taiwan Mobile, Marathon Expo in Taipei, SHOKZ, Synmosa, EVA Air, Allsports Community, EPISODE – JdV by Hyatt Hotel, Betery, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical, Wu Pao Chun Bakery, Bravelog Sport Technology, Vitalon, Hermes, Red Bull, GIGIJING, OATSIDE Oat Milk, The Bread, K.K. ORCHARD, Viva Nuts, TRIKO FOODS CO., LTD., Chinese Kinesiology Taping Association, and StarTrust System Inc., among many other well-known enterprises across various sectors, actively contribute resources to enhance overall event quality and athlete services.
As the first corporate sponsor to support a marathon event through the use of carbon credits, Fubon Financial Holding voluntarily offset the carbon emissions of the 2022 and 2023 Taipei Marathon events by providing voluntary carbon credits. These initiatives are intended to raise climate awareness and encourage the public to embrace environmental responsibility while enjoying sports. In 2025, the event will continue to apply for carbon footprint verification by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
In addition, special thanks are extended to the Songshan Ciyou Temple Foundation for its long-standing support of this internationally recognized marathon. Through such public–private collaboration, runners from around the world are provided with professional, comprehensive, and internationally standardized race services, further demonstrating Taipei City’s continued achievements in advancing its development as a sports-oriented city.
