2025 Taipei Marathon Kicks Off at City Hall Square
28,000 Runners from Taiwan and Around the World Unite to Showcase Taipei’s Global Sporting Excellence
The 2025 Taipei Marathon, the only World Athletics (WA) Gold Label city marathon in Taiwan, officially kicked off early this morning (December 21) at Taipei City Hall Square. In response to the incident that occurred on December 19, the Taipei City Government implemented enhanced security measures. A total of 693 police officers were deployed—341 more than usual, effectively doubling the standard security force—to strengthen perimeter safety. Police vehicles equipped with anti-ramming protection were positioned along both sides of the controlled start zone to ensure comprehensive event security.
At 5:00 a.m., Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-hua and Deputy Secretary-General Yu Chen-hua conducted an on-site inspection to review security arrangements. Officers assigned to the race route were fully equipped with standard-issue firearms, batons, pepper spray, body cameras, radios, traffic batons, flashlights, and sirens, providing effective deterrence against potential unlawful behavior. At 8:00 a.m., Mayor Chiang Wan-an visited the Emergency Operations Center to confirm that all race operations and surrounding environments were fully secured. With the coordinated efforts of all city departments, 28,000 runners successfully completed the race, marking another milestone in Taipei’s international sporting history.
The Department of Sports, Taipei City Government, stated that the Taipei Marathon is not only a major platform for runners in Taiwan but also one of Asia’s most representative urban international marathons. Through meticulous race planning and well-designed city routes, the event continues to demonstrate Taipei’s professional capability in hosting large-scale international sporting events. In response to the unfortunate incident on December 19, a one-minute moment of silence was observed prior to the start of the race by all participants and on-site personnel, paying tribute to the victims and reflecting the respect and unifying power embodied by sport. The Department expressed its sincere appreciation to all runners, citizens, frontline staff, and police officers for their collective efforts in safeguarding the event. Through running, the marathon conveyed resilience and forward momentum, bringing the city together and demonstrating unity in the face of adversity.
Elite International Showdowns Elevate Gold Label Standards
In accordance with World Athletics Gold Label regulations, the race featured a top-tier lineup of elite international athletes. Competition in the men’s full marathon was intense, with Kenyan Platinum-level runner CHUMBA Bethwel Kibet competing alongside Israeli standout TEFERI Maru and other world-class athletes. Kibet ultimately crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:09:31, securing the men’s title.
In the women’s race, Ethiopian stars EDMISS Gadise Mulu and BEYENE Tirfi Tsegaye both broke the course record during the competition. EDMISS Gadise Mulu delivered a commanding performance, finishing in 2:24:17 to claim the women’s championship and the USD 100,000 prize purse. Her result significantly surpassed last year’s winning time and elevated the competitive standard of the Taipei Marathon course, making it one of the standout highlights of the event.
Taiwanese Runners Shine on the World Stage
Driven by the pace set by international elites, Taiwanese runners also delivered outstanding performances. In the men’s race, Shih Yu-Zuo, a track athlete making his first appearance at the Taipei Marathon, surprised the field by winning the domestic men’s title with a time of 2:22:59, demonstrating composed pacing and unwavering determination at critical moments.
On the women’s side, Chang Chih-Hsuan claimed the domestic women’s title in 2:47:14, crossing the finish line with a confident smile that reflected both composure and strength. In the half marathon, Tien Jui-Hsiang captured the domestic men’s title, while Wu Wan-Ching topped the domestic women’s division, highlighting the continued development and growing international competitiveness of Taiwan’s long-distance running talent.
Enhanced Prize Incentives and “Top 100 Honor Roll” Celebrate Excellence
To encourage domestic athletes to pursue higher performance standards, the organizing committee awarded a total of NT$500,000 in prize money to the top ten Taiwanese finishers in both the men’s and women’s marathon categories, further elevating competition intensity.
To commemorate the Taipei Marathon’s Gold Label status, the event introduced the “Gold Label Top 100 Honor Roll,” with the names of the top 100 Taiwanese male and female finishers displayed in the official digital program and on an on-site honor roll at Taipei Stadium. The initiative drew significant attention from runners and spectators alike, symbolizing a lasting legacy for local athletes on an international platform.
Half Marathon System Upgraded to Meet International Standards
This year also marked a significant upgrade to the half marathon division. To align with international regulations, the organizers increased the number of chip timing checkpoints, enabling domestic half marathon runners to use their Taipei Marathon results when applying for eligibility in international athletics events. The enhancement is expected to help emerging athletes strengthen their competitive foundation, advance toward full marathon elite competition, and elevate Taiwan’s overall marathon performance standards.
Comprehensive Post-Race Services Support Runner Recovery
At the finish line, distinguished figures from the sports and public sectors welcomed runners and presented finisher medals, sharing in the moment of achievement. Post-race services at Taipei Stadium included massage therapy, ice foot baths, recovery refreshments, and commemorative gifts, ensuring runners received comprehensive care following their race.
Advancing Sustainability and Social Responsibility
The Taipei Marathon continued to integrate sustainability across all aspects of the event. Measures included biodegradable cups at aid stations, electronic race result certificates, eco-friendly race apparel, and awards crafted from recycled marine waste. Additional initiatives such as clothing donation drives, sustainability cheer stations, and food bank collaborations encouraged runners to give back to the community and reinforced the marathon’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
As the first corporate sponsor to support a marathon event through the use of carbon credits, Fubon Financial Holding voluntarily offset the carbon emissions of the 2022 and 2023 Taipei Marathon events by providing voluntary carbon credits. These initiatives are intended to raise climate awareness and encourage the public to embrace environmental responsibility while enjoying sports. In 2025, the event will continue to apply for carbon footprint verification by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Public–Private Collaboration Drives Taipei’s Global Sports Brand
The Taipei City Government expressed sincere appreciation to long-term corporate and community partners—including Fubon Financial, adidas, Herbalife, CITIZEN, PaMi Noodles, Porsche Center Taipei (PGUM), Taiwan Mobile, Marathon Expo in Taipei, SHOKZ, Synmosa, EVA Air, Allsports Community, EPISODE – JdV by Hyatt Hotel, Betery, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical, Wu Pao Chun Bakery, Bravelog Sport Technology, Vitalon, Hermes, Red Bull, GIGIJING, OATSIDE Oat Milk, The Bread, K.K. ORCHARD, Viva Nuts, TRIKO FOODS CO., LTD., Chinese Kinesiology Taping Association, StarTrust System Inc., and the Songshan Ciyou Temple—for their continued support. Through strong public–private collaboration, the Taipei Marathon has delivered professional, safe, and internationally recognized race services while enhancing the city’s global visibility, tourism appeal, and economic vitality.
By uniting sport, community, and sustainability, the Taipei Marathon continues to propel the city forward—running beyond the finish and striving toward new horizons.
